In this short presentation, two main issues are covered. What can we do to make our regular English system computers Japanese capable? Once we make them so, what can we do with them? Questions are highly encouraged during the presentation. Please feel free to contact me at the above email address after the presentation.

Invitation to senseiOnline listserv

SenseiOnline is a listserv. Listserv serves a group of people with similar interest. In this case, this group is intended for teachers of Japanese who potenitally and currently use on-line materials in teaching. If you become a member, you will be reading series of e-mail messages posted by other members. When you post a message, it will go to a central computer from where your message is distributed automatically to all members.

The objective for this list is to network teachers who use on-line materials, share ideas and support each other. Possible topics would be software and hardware issues, showing and using Web pages as a material, using listserv as a class management tool, using chat sessions, e-mail penpal projects, making Web page as projects and syllabus, creating Web-based materials, on-line assessments, delivering class partially or totally on-line, related announcements, "Somebody, help!" and more.

I Japanese-capable questions

Here we cover two main platforms: Windows based (PC) and Apple Macintosh computers.

Windows-based:

Windows 2000

Windows Professional is multilingual, but is it for you?
http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWS2000/guide/professional/solutions/multilingual.asp

Windows 95/98

My article on winter issue of AATJ newsletter: MS Global IME and Word 2000
http://www.asu.edu/clas/dll/jpn/aatj/articles/schneider9910.html
Now Global IME works with Netscape Communicator as well.

Third party software that makes it possible.
(List provided by Tae Kunisawa by Wake County Public School, NC)

Word processor only solutions:
1. JWP
2. JWPce
This is good for just typing. You cannot send e-mail and cannot make homepage in Japanese. These are free.

3.AsianSuite 97
Go to http://www.unionway.com . and download evaluation version which allows you to use the software for 60 days free. You can type, send e-mail and make homepage in Japanese with this.

4.Kanjikit This is similar to AsianSuite 97 http://www.pspinc.com/lsg/kkit/index.htm

Although Kunisawa sensei left it out from the list, NJStart is also very popular. Similar to Kanji Kit and Asian Suite.

In my opinion, making Windows based computer Japanese capable is rather problematic, I would welcome comments from participants.

Mac

Mac OS 9

Japanese Language Kit (along with other languages) come with the system. Catch? You have to have PowerPC processor and huge memory to run it.

Step-by-step graphical instruction on how to install Language kit, by Yasuhiro Omoto sensei from University of Michigan
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~yomoto/Computing/JLK.html

Mac OS 8.x

If you don't have JLK already, you are out of luck? Apple and other stores do not sell JLK anymore. But wait, if you have OS8.5 or 8.6, maybe you can view Japanese, but not to write.

OK, now I have Japanese capable computers. Why can't I surf the Web in Japanese?

For both platforms, you may have to play with browser setting. Here are examples with Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.

If you can't print Japanese correctly and really desperate, print your page as graphic.
