Questions:
Q1)
Our department is really emphasizing the use of the target language for
Culture, but to be honest if I use an authentic Japanese site to learn
Japanese culture-- for example, Kabuki or sumie―the students will not gain much information even if they use Reading Tutor, Rikai or other on-line dictionaries. (I teach beginning and Intermediate levels.) Also if we want them to read materials related to other disciplines, often they are too difficult, and I sense real frustration from the students and often these tasks achieve nothing more than gathering bits and pieces of vocabulary. Could you suggest some web sites related to Japanese culture, geography, history and other disciplines, which are written in simple enough Japanese for the students to handle?
Q2)
About using e-mail pals, my question is how do you assess the achievement?
Do you suggest giving the students some topics to discuss with native speakers? Do you suggest turning in the print out of their e-mail correspondence to verify that they are actually engaging in the conversation? Do you know of any paper written about how to handle this kind of the task and its assessment?
Ask yourself questions:
What is the purpose of the activity?
What are the objectives of the activity?
